Another restaurant picked from Enroute Magazine’s awaited ” Best restaurants of Canada ” booklet.
We showed up at the restaurant during a nice summer evening. The place was busy and we didn’t have a reservation , it was Thursday. Tables were out on the pedestrian street offering some nice people watching opportunities.
My first impression of the service was bad. We were standing in front of the entrance for quite a bit of time waiting for someone to come to us and propose some tables. As soon as we were seated, we were asked whether we wanted to have some martinis or cocktails to start with…Sorry, we didn’t have time to look at the drink list or the menu so we asked for a couple of minutes to decide.
The couple of minutes were quite long. Few waiters passed by us without paying attention to us and our assigned one was quite “busy” with another table. It took quite a bit of time before someone took our order.
The four service table d’hôte was reasonably priced, on average $38+ tax and service. My choice fell on the Salmon Tartare as a starter and a Fletan and Shrimps Bouillabaisse as a main while my partner in crime took a suckling pig on a mushroom risotto.
Although the salmon was very fresh, I was not impressed with the tartare which obviously lacked some character. The bouillabaisse recipe was different from a traditional one but it was the best dish of the supper, bravo for the originality! The suckling pig was delicious but on the other hand, the risotto was too salty.
On the drinks’ side, we were sad to see that the choice of wine by the glass was quite limited.
The dessert was great, I will remember that Amarula flavoured Creme brûlée.
Do we come back ?
We are leaving this restaurant with some mixed feelings. Some dishes were excellent while others were pretty flavourless. Service was good once the meal in itself started but I left like they were missing some personel on the floor to greet newly arrived guests. We would give them another chance during one of the “4 à huitres” during which oysters are priced $1/piece between 4:00pm and 8:00pm.
